Centre Stage

By Isha Sesay

This summer Khenya returns to Blue Marlin Ibiza with a sound that is bold, vibrant and entirely her own. Blending percussive power with tribal textures, the DJ and producer’s sets are rich in rhythm and emotion, each one a reflection of her Cuban roots and global vision. Bringing a magnetic intensity to the decks, Khenya’s music is set to captivate and connect.

You’ve had a busy winter, what have you been working on in the off season?

During the winter, I focused on refining my DJ skills and working on new productions in Ibiza, while also exploring fresh music to shape my sound. I had an incredible first trip to Japan and South Korea, immersing myself in its unique culture, and I’ve also been touring across Europe as a DJ.

What’s been the biggest source of inspiration for your productions?

Growing up in Cuba, I naturally love percussion so my sound has been developing. It now feels more tribal, with Latin influences which takes me back to my roots and I’m always looking for great songs that have that emotion.

When you’re in the studio, what’s the first thing you focus on when starting a new track?

The hook is where it all starts: a great idea, sample or reference that sparks everything. From there, I build the right sound palette and create a first demo, then refine it over time until it feels right. Last year was my first year as a producer, and now that I truly feel I’ve found my sound, I’m more excited than ever to share what’s coming.

How do you balance keeping your Cuban roots in your sound while pushing new musical directions?

My Cuban roots are part of me so as a DJ and producer I love percussion and Latin vocals as I was also a percussionist. Not every song needs to reflect that but it is a key part of how I am as an artist and my new productions really embrace this.

What journey do you want to take the crowd on at Blue Marlin this summer?

I want to shake things up, challenge the norm, and make people feel something real.

My goal is to create a space where people can disconnect from everything and just live in the moment.

How would you describe the energy you bring to the dance floor?

I always come prepared, spending hours digging for new music and testing ideas. My energy is all about passion and authenticity. I want the crowd to feel the excitement in every track, every drop and in every moment.

Outside of music, what has been inspiring you creatively lately?

Travelling to many different countries has been a huge source of inspiration for me. Every place I visit exposes me to new cultures, art forms and ways of living. Whether it’s the local fashion, the energy of the people, or their unique expressions, it all fuels my creativity and helps me approach my music from fresh perspectives.
